What's the deal with the so-called "reddit island?"

Main Post:

I've seen many memes about this and I'm confused as to whether this is a joke or not

The catastrophe of Reddit Island

Main Post:

Reddit Island was an unrecognised quasi-state project which lasted for 3 weeks before all main buildings were destroyed in Tropical Cyclone Dovi and the island was reduced to a primitive way of life. If the island survived and was recognised as a sovereign state, it would’ve been the world’s smallest country by population and the only one to not have a flag. It was lead by Jonny Caldwell before he died due to Dovi. His death resulted in 4 other people claimed leadership thereafter, including James Corinth, Richard Brown, Smith Jones, and Todd Lee leading to the “Reddit Skurmish” where a further 133 of the men living on Reddit Island died. After the skurmish, 3 abandoned Reddit Island while Smith Jones did not until he was killed in the aftermath of Dovi. After Jones died, all of the government claiming to lead Reddit Island when it began was non-existent, and the island descended into tribalism before Tuvaluan police took control of the island and re-integrated it into Tuvalu. The remaining 468 men on the island were all arrested and are now held in ADX Florence.

r/Reddit_Island users are being scammed by a redditor who claims to own an island and has dubbed him the "messiah".

First time poster, long time lurker. Let's see if I can do this right!

Island Owner Here

Throwaway account for privacy reasons.

I’ve been reading about your attempts to buy either an island or town, and I think I might be able to help you guys out.

I own a small island (about 120 acres) that my grandfather purchased about 40 years ago. As of right now, I only have a small cabin built on it and it’s been a dream of mine to build a community there for several years now.

If you guys are willing to help fund any construction or legal costs, I’d be happy to help set up a self-sufficient society of redditors there.

Please DM me if you’re interested, mods.

"He's the Messiah!!" one poor user says, unbeknownst to the scam.

Island Owner asking for funding to chip in for construction...Chip in????? Credit to u/RunDNA for this removed post!

LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

I’ve done a bit more research on what needs to be done to make this a reality.

The plan is to start small and grow from there. Anyone that’s willing to aid with construction is encouraged to come help. The first priority is gonna be running water. Due to the heat, we’re gonna need a lot of water and it’ll be very difficult to transfer enough by boat. I had been looking into it beforehand and got it authorized, all we need is manpower to dig out areas to lay pipes.

Another issue is the funding

I’ve submitted applications for building permits for housing and other facilities. Once those are approved, it’ll cost a few hundred bucks to get them officially registered. We’re also gonna need to pay for boat rentals to transport people and supplies. I own a medium sized fishing boat, but it can only carry about 6 people, so we’ll need additional boats if more people are planning on coming.

If anyone is able to fly to Cuba, reach out to me in DMs for where and when we should meet to go to the island.

If anyone would like to chip in with the costs, my PayPal is ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛@⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ Any amount is much appreciated!

Donors will have their reddit usernames engraved on a plaque to commemorate their contributions

One redditor forsees the future in the comments

IT ISN'T A SCAM!!! HE POSTED PROOF OF HIS ISLAND ON HIS PROFILE!!!! THE PICTURES DIDN'T SHOW UP AS RESULTS ON THE INTERNET!! LEGIT!!!

Talk about legitimacy of Island Ownership...Island Owner: Let me get back to you with my deed!!!

Google Maps Screenshot of the location of this guy's Island....hmmmm...

Redditor compiling data the Island Owner has provided...HMMMMM...

3 days later Island Owner sends pic of deed of the Island and many more redditors become skeptical

Island Owner responds to redditor asking to be on the list: "Donate so you can get your name on a shitty plaque and have PRIORITY of becoming a "citizen" on the island!"

"What does citizenship mean in regards to the island?" one redditor asks

Island Owner: "the laws are the same as they would be for sharing a house with someone" UHHHH

Redditor points out in the comments how the google maps screenshot does not correspond with the coordinates Island owner provided in the deed

"Why is the title in Spanish but the text itself is in English?" "Cuban Island." LOL

"It says 155 acres of Island" Uh..

Private land ownership was not recognized until 2018, free market sales not allowed until 2011 but the guy's grandpa bought the island 20 years ago? EDIT: He's asking for donations via PayPal which is not approved for use in Cuba, potentially using Western Union to get his money from someone in the states.

Another redditor chimes in saying Western Union is no longer doing money transfers to Cuba

"I typed in Miguel D Ramos surveyor, he seems to have no sort of internet profile whatsoever. You would think he would, especially nowadays."

"This document wasn't written "nowadays""

One Redditor posts his skepticism on the legitimacy of the Island Owner...on a subreddit dedicated to the Island Owner?

Island Owner's Response: "Firstly, get a life" and proceeds to defend himself in the comments, question after question

What I found most interesting on this topic, I hope I covered enough. I find it a bit entertaining, as the user is still trying to defend himself and also asking for donations still.

EDIT: Island Owner has since been banned from the subreddit and the mods have request that those who donated should request a charge back.

EDIT 2:

Shoutout to u/BossDailyGaming for bringing this into light from the very beginning! Check out their profile for more on the scammer as well a r/IslandOwnerAlt

u/Wholesomefeathers linked a comment to the user confirming he scammed them and will not refund his victims but chances are, he will be forced to refund them and will have his PayPal account suspended
